Board Chair

Volunteer Position  Approx. 6–8 hours per month. Can be based anywhere in New Zealand

Key Responsibilities

Governance & Leadership

  • Provide leadership to the Board while upholding GrandFriends’ mission, values, and charitable purpose.

  • Ensure high standards of governance, ethics, cultural safety, and compliance with legal obligations.

  • Support and empower Board members to contribute effectively.

Board Development

  • Assist with recruiting new Board members and building a well-rounded governance team.

  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and forward-thinking Board culture.

  • Support training and development for Board members as needed.

Strategic Direction

  • Work with the Board and Founder to develop, review, and implement the strategic plan.

  • Guide initiatives that expand the charity’s reach, strengthen impact, and support long-term sustainability.

Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Support the organisation’s fundraising strategy, including grants, partnerships, and donor relationships.

  • Build relationships with potential funders, philanthropic partners, and community groups.

Advocacy & External Relations

  • Represent GrandFriends in the community and with stakeholders when required.

  • Help to promote awareness of the charity’s mission and advocate for intergenerational connection and reduction of isolation.

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Support the development of key performance indicators to track programme outcomes.

  • Oversee effective monitoring systems to ensure ongoing improvement and impact measurement.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated commitment to social impact and community wellbeing.

  • Governance or leadership experience (nonprofit governance preferred).

  • Strong strategic thinking, planning, and communication skills.

  • Experience in fundraising, partnerships, or community engagement (advantageous).

  • Understanding of issues relating to social isolation and intergenerational connection (advantageous).

Time Commitment

Approximately 6–8 hours per month (may include evenings and weekends). The chair will need to attend Board meetings and may also be required to attend planning sessions and occasional events.
