The Chatty Café Scheme

Chatty Café New Zealand helps connect communities and increase social interactions by getting people chatting.

Research indicates that one in four people experiences a sense of loneliness and social disconnection every week.

For those who may be feeling lonely, need some support or simply want to have some friendly conversation, Chatty Café tables provide a place where they can connect for a chat.

Tables can be set up by local cafés and coffee shops or venues such as libraries and community hubs, and can run at any time or at a set day and time each week. Some tables are staffed by volunteers who help to facilitate conversation.

The Chatty Café Scheme began in the UK and has since been set up in Australia and the USA.

GrandFriends started the scheme in New Zealand in 2026. For GrandFriends, the Chatty Café concept is a natural extension of our work to connect older people and families. Through GrandFriends and the Chatty Café Scheme, we can connect even more people - young and old, for a few minutes, a few hours or in a long-term relationship.
