Spring activities

Spring is here. The weather is warming up (slowly) and the clocks are changing, bringing longer, lighter evenings. Here are some of our favourite activities for Spring.

Plant a garden

If you have space for a veggie patch, now is a great time to plant cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce ready for salads. It’s a great time to plant strawberries too - just make sure you get to them before the birds do!

Enjoy seasonal produce

Fruits like strawberries and veggies like asparagus come into season in the Spring. Find some new recipes to try using seasonal ingredients. Maybe even using some of the fruits or veggies you planted in the garden.

Take a walk

Take advantage of warmer, longer days and head out for a walk. Spring is lambing season, so be careful around farms or rural land as parts may be closed. You might see some cute baby animals though!

Fly a kite

The brighter weather in Spring makes it a good time to get outdoors, but it can still be changeable. But the windy weather Spring brings is a great opportunity to try kite flying. Head to your local park or beach and have a go.

Look out for native birds

Spring brings lots of native birds, including tūi and pīwakawaka (fantails) so keep an eye out in your garden. Tūi particularly like the nectar from flax flowers.

Do some Spring cleaning

Not the most fun activity, but why not use the change of season as a reason to do some decluttering? Donate items in good condition that you no longer want, or maybe hold a garage sale to make some pocket money.
